The Countdown Is On

by montejosmemorials on January 2, 2013

After the excitement of the holidays, the countdown is on!

We have 7 days to prepare to leave for Guatemala. We will drive to Fort Lauderdale Wednesday and fly out Thursday.

I have been making lists and packing in my head, but now we really can get started. My head has been swimming with all of the aspects of making sure we have everything we need. Thinking through what could happen with 6 children and making sure we can cover the things that come up like motion sickness, which is probably almost guaranteed when you combine the curvy roads because of the mountains and the crazy way of driving, has been quite the challenge!

Our last trip to Guatemala was 11 years ago. The preparation then was for 3 children, and they were all under 6. This time, even though there are more of us, it has been easier in a lot of ways, because our children are older.

Before we went last time, we were able to collect donations, as we have this time. We used the donations we received for that trip to help the children, in the school in Marinely’s village, buy their school books and supplies.

This trip, God has blessed us to be a part of something even bigger!

The church where Marinely’s family worships is in the process of building. They have started with the roof, walls and part of the floor. They still need to finish the rest of the floor, windows and doors, buy instruments, and other odds and ends. Part of the donations we received will help with some of these things.

We also will be visiting Fundacion Salvacion, which is an orphanage. We are going to have the chance to play music there and have a pizza party with the kids. This is something they love and don’t get to have very often.

The orphanage also has a school that is bilingual and will be opening this month. We are using part of the donations we have received to start a library for them. The books we chose are Christian Biographies Then and Now. Nineteen of their missionary stories are available in Spanish and English, so they will have both languages available to read.

I am going to try to continue to update over the next few weeks. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll do a big update when we return!

Please keep us in prayer as we prepare and actually travel!

Specific Prayers

  • Safety, health and protection as we prepare and travel
  • Time to be multiplied while we are there, because we have way too many things to fit in
  • That we will stay on God’s schedule, ordering our days as He wants us to, accepting changes as divine appointments
  • That God will use us to shine His light and be a blessing in every circumstance we encounter

If this trip sounds like something you would like to plant seeds into, we can be contacted at Thanks to all who already have!
